party time, excellent

So we had a party to celebrate E's name change, because obviously. Activities we considered including in the festivities were:

+ Pin The Packer On The Ambiguously-Gendered Person

+ Water Gun Fight Featuring Pecker Water Pistols <---- actual name of product, found in the bachelorette section at the party store

+ A Blue and/or Pink Pinata Labeled "Gender Stereotypes" (so we could smash it)

In the end it was a more understated affair, decorated with a CONGRATS banner and one "It's a Boy" balloon surrounded by others in the colors of the trans pride flag.

I had the idea of recreating the cake friends gave us 16 years ago when I was waiting to find out the gender of my unborn baby (as seen in this post aka The One Where I Explain This Blog's Title). The Kroger baker/artist kicked ass, amirite?

Our group was small but loud with joy and we ate and laughed and sang along to Prince and played Cards Against Humanity until it got dark.

Friends who couldn't be there in person sent cards.

And I commissioned a piece of artwork from my friend Ken who came through in a big way. Here is E in his natural habitat, surrounded by things he loves.

(click to embiggen, you won't regret it)

Thank you to everyone who sent their well wishes, from near and far.
We felt your love and carry it with us.

  1. Ok I've attempted to post this mulptiple times. I think I know your son through my daughter who is also T1D. I'm so proud of you and your son I could jump for joy. I read the letter you posted to your family and was wowed again. Our daughter when through a period where she wasn't sure about her gender idenity now it can be best described as fluid rather then specific. She is more a she then not but I knew no matter where we ended it would be something that we as a family would support entirely. I send your family and son much love and joy.
